Delegation
The registry record that says a domain exists and names the servers authoritative for answering queries about it.
Delegation is the one thing a zone file proves. Whoever controls the delegation controls where a domain's mail, web traffic and certificate validation go, which is why an unexpected delegation change is the classic first sign of a domain hijack.
