Finding Telegram channels when you do not know a single handle

Discover mode searches a curated catalogue of verified public channels by niche. What that catalogue is, what it is not, and why searching for a technology beats searching for an English phrase.

Short answer

Telegram has no public directory of channels, so discovery has to start from a list somebody built. This Actor ships a curated catalogue of verified public channels grouped into fourteen niches, and discover mode searches the largest channels in a chosen niche for your keywords — no channel names required. The catalogue is hand-built and hand-checked, the run log states how many channels were searched, and it does not reach channels outside the list. It is also global and mostly not in English, which changes what you should search for: a technology name returned 180 genuine results across 13 channels where an everyday English word returns far fewer.

Key points

  • Telegram publishes no channel directory, so any discovery tool is searching a list somebody assembled — the question is whether it says so.
  • The catalogue is curated and verified by hand, grouped into fourteen niches from jobs and crypto to law and sport.
  • The run log states how many channels were searched, so the denominator behind a result count is never hidden.
  • The catalogue is global and mostly non-English, because Telegram's largest job channels are in Arabic, Persian, Chinese and Russian.
  • Technical terms stay in the Latin alphabet inside posts in other scripts: one technology search returned 180 results across 13 channels, all genuine.

Every question about finding Telegram channels runs into the same wall: there is no directory. What follows is what a tool can honestly do about that.

Telegram has no directory

Telegram publishes no browsable index of public channels. Its in-app search matches names and recent activity, not a catalogue you can enumerate. So every discovery tool is searching a list somebody assembled by hand, and the only real question is whether it tells you that.

What the catalogue is

This Actor ships a curated list of verified public channels, grouped into fourteen niches: jobs, business, crypto, tech, news, marketing, education, health, law, lifestyle, culture, sport, social and other. It is built and checked by hand, and it is a list rather than a crawl.

The number that makes a result count meaningful

“180 results” means nothing without knowing how many channels were searched. The run log states it, every time. A result count without its denominator is the same failure as a percentage without its sample size.

Search for the technology, not for the phrasing

The catalogue is global and mostly not in English, because Telegram's largest job channels are in Arabic, Persian, Chinese and Russian. In practice this matters less than it sounds for technical searches: a technology name stays in the Latin alphabet inside a post written in another script. One such search returned 180 results across 13 channels, every one a genuine posting for that technology.

An everyday English word behaves differently. Searching for remote or hiring returns far less than you would expect, because the surrounding text is in another language — and what does come back is subject to stemming. Search for the technology, the tool or the company name.

Using discover mode

input.json
{
  "mode": "discover",
  "niche": "jobs",
  "searchTerms": ["react", "typescript"],
  "maxChannels": 40
}

Each catalogue channel costs one request, and the per-channel post cap drops to 20 by default because this mode opens many channels at once. Raise maxChannels to widen the search; the channels are opened largest first.

Frequently asked questions

Does discover mode search all of Telegram?
No, and that is stated up front. It searches a curated catalogue of verified public channels that ships with the Actor, and the run log reports how many channels were searched. A discovery tool that quietly searches forty places is easy to mistake for one that searches everything.
Why does searching for `remote` return so little?
Because the catalogue is mostly not in English — Telegram's largest job channels are in Arabic, Persian, Chinese and Russian — so the surrounding text is in another language even when the subject matches. Search for the technology, the tool or the company name instead of the phrasing.
How many channels does a discover run open?
As many as `maxChannels` allows, largest first, defaulting to 40. Each channel costs one request, and the per-channel post cap drops to 20 by default in this mode because it opens many channels at once.

The Telegram API question

The Bot API cannot read a channel it is not in. MTProto needs a phone number and an api_id. The public web preview needs neither, and it is what a channel publishes to the open web.

The attachment finding

Documents, voice notes, audio, stickers, locations and round videos never appeared once in the anonymous preview. Fields that would always be false were cut rather than shipped.
